Convicted killer in machete attack to be sentenced on April 15
Client: Jonathan Sylvester
Charge: Murder
Status: awaiting sentencing
Convicted killer Jonathan Sylvester will face a sentencing hearing later this month in the machete murder of his bullying roommate.
Lawyer Alain Hepner appeared in criminal appearance court on behalf of defence lawyer Michael Oykhman on Friday to schedule April 15 for submissions in Sylvester’s case.
Sylvester, who appeared via closed-circuit TV from the Calgary Remand Centre, did not address court during the brief proceedings.
He was convicted in January of second-degree murder in the Oct. 27, 2017, machete death of Calgarian Jordan Frydenlund.
Sylvester, 43, struck Frydenlund, 30, across the neck with a machete as the deceased approached him and appeared to be getting ready for a fight.
Frydenlund had earlier assaulted a guest to their Kingsland apartment and attacked another roommate that day.
When Sylvester arrived home to find both men injured he became enraged and decided to evict Frydenlund.
With the assistance of roommate Warren Swampy, Sylvester removed all of Frydenlund’s belonging from the unit and had them placed in a dumpster behind the apartment building.
When the deceased arrived to find Swampy about to dump a final load into the trash he walked by him and headed towards Sylvester, who was standing at the back door.
As Frydenlund began putting gloves on, something he always did before fighting, Sylvester struck him with the machete he was concealing behind his back.
At trial, Sylvester claimed it was Swampy who was the killer, but Justice Keith Yamauchi dismissed his testimony.
“His story is far-fetched and when the Crown challenged him on certain aspects, he appeared to this court to make things up,” Yamauchi said.
