Hepner graduated from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 1975. He was called to the Bar in 1976, and he received the designation of the Queen's Counsel in 1989.
Hepner is a member of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) and has appeared before administrative tribunals, such as the Alberta Review Board, in dealing with individuals found to be not criminally responsible or unfit to stand trial. He is retained by the Calgary Police Association to defend police officers being investigated or charged with criminal allegations. He has served on the Board of Directors for Legal Aid Alberta and was a Bencher for the Law Society of Alberta, the governing body for practicing lawyers.
Alain Hepner was named Criminal Lawyer of the Year in 2020. In 2018, Alain Hepner Law was included on a prestigious list of top 10 criminal law practices in Canada. He also holds the Martindale Hubbell Peer Review Rating for achieving the highest level of professional excellence.
