Woman at centre of Law Society complaint against Jonathan Denis facing criminal charges

Client: Jonathan Denis

Charge: Two Law Society citations

Defence: Denis faces two Law Society citations, including an allegation that he threatened to make a complaint against Courtney McMullan to a regulatory authority in an attempt to gain a benefit for Casey Karpiuk.

The “other woman” at the centre of a Law Society complaint against former justice minister Jonathan Denis is now facing criminal charges involving her philandering ex-boyfriend and his wife.

Court records show Courtney McMullan was charged by Airdrie RCMP last week with allegations she criminally harassed Casey Karpiuk and uttered a threat to his wife, Darcy Karpiuk.

Denis faces two Law Society citations, including an allegation that he threatened to make a complaint against McMullan to a regulatory authority in an attempt to gain a benefit for Casey Karpiuk.

In a Nov. 13, 2021, cease and desist email sent by Denis to McMullan, the former justice minister noted the Calgary woman, who dated Casey Karpiuk for several months before learning he was not separated from his wife, was employed as a peace officer.

McMullan, who was on medical leave at the time, was told in the email that continuing contact with the Karpiuks “may verily fall outside of your code of conduct as part of your profession.”

McMullan told Denis’ disciplinary hearing two weeks ago that she contacted Darcy Karpiuk to confirm the couple’s marital status after she became suspicious Casey was engaging her in an extramarital affair.

She denied claims by the couple she repeatedly harassed them.

Denis’ lawyer, Alain Hepner, told Postmedia on Tuesday that he has contacted the Law Society’s counsel, Shanna Hunka, to indicate he wishes to raise the recent criminal allegations against McMullan to the tribunal hearing his client’s case.

He said he forwarded to Hunka two emails allegedly sent to the Karpiuks.

“The panel should have a fulsome knowledge of the circumstances,” Hepner said.

The defence lawyer said the allegations McMullan now faces may relate to the type of conduct Denis was trying to prevent.

McMullan, who was released without any financial obligation, is under an order to have no contact with the couple.

Denis’ hearing is set to resume April 18, after lawyers file written briefs.
